Last week, I recommended going to the famous restaurant ๋ช…๋™ ๊ต์ž (Myeongdong Gyoza) in Myeongdong. One of our premium subscribers, Joseph, asked us how to order food in a Korean restaurant and if we have any good recommendations for a wine bar near Hongdae.
Donโ€™t worry Joseph, weโ€™ve got you covered today! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I) Our Wine Bar recommendation near Hongdae

Wine bars are extremely popular in Korea and the perfect place to enjoy Western food and wine in a lovely atmosphere with LP music.

We would like to recommend going to โ€˜Ripperโ€™ โ€“ only a 10-minute walk from Hongik Station. You can practice Korean, but the owner also speaks English, so you can go there without any worries.
We hope you have a great time there, Joseph! ๐Ÿท

Closed every Sunday and Monday.

II) Entering the Restaurant

When you enter the restaurant, you will be greeted with:
๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ "์–ด์„œ ์˜ค์„ธ์š”" (Eoseo oseyo) which means "Welcome."

You can simply respond with:
๐Ÿ˜Š "์•ˆ๋…•ํ•˜์„ธ์š”" (Annyeonghaseyo).

They will then ask you:
๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ ๋ช‡๋ถ„์ด์„ธ์š”? (Myeot bun-i-se-yo) How many people are you?

You can adjust the number accordingly:

  1. One person: ํ•œ ๋ช…์ด์—์š” (Han myeong-ieyo)

  2. Two people: ๋‘ ๋ช…์ด์—์š” (Du myeong-ieyo)

  3. Three people: ์„ธ ๋ช…์ด์—์š” (Se myeong-ieyo)

  4. Four people: ๋„ค ๋ช…์ด์—์š” (Ne myeong-ieyo)

Letโ€™s break down this answ

er together:
๐Ÿ‘‰ ํ•œ (Han) - Number 1 in Korean
๐Ÿ‘‰ ๋ช… (Myeong) - Counter for people
๐Ÿ‘‰ ์ด์—์š” (I-e-yo) - from the verb ์ด๋‹ค which can be translated as "is" or "it is"

IV) Ordering Food

Korea is very modern, and you will often find digital tablets on the tables, allowing you to order directly without having to call the waiter. If there is no tablet, you can look for a button to call them, which is very practical as you donโ€™t have to call out for service.

However, not all restaurants have those, so you may still need to get the waiter's attention by saying:
