Last week, I recommended going to the famous restaurant 명동 교자 (Myeongdong Gyoza) in Myeongdong. One of our premium subscribers, Joseph, asked us how to order food in a Korean restaurant and if we have any good recommendations for a wine bar near Hongdae.

Wine bars are extremely popular in Korea and the perfect place to enjoy Western food and wine in a lovely atmosphere with LP music.

We would like to recommend going to ‘Ripper’ – only a 10-minute walk from Hongik Station. You can practice Korean, but the owner also speaks English, so you can go there without any worries.

Closed every Sunday and Monday.

When you enter the restaurant, you will be greeted with:
🙋‍♂️ "어서 오세요" (Eoseo oseyo) which means "Welcome."

You can simply respond with:
😊 "안녕하세요" (Annyeonghaseyo).

They will then ask you:
🙋‍♂️ 몇분이세요? (Myeot bun-i-se-yo) How many people are you?

You can adjust the number accordingly:

1. One person: 한 명이에요 (Han myeong-ieyo)

2. Two people: 두 명이에요 (Du myeong-ieyo)

3. Three people: 세 명이에요 (Se myeong-ieyo)

4. Four people: 네 명이에요 (Ne myeong-ieyo)

Let’s break down this answ

👉 한 (Han) - Number 1 in Korean
👉 명 (Myeong) - Counter for people
👉 이에요 (I-e-yo) - from the verb 이다 which can be translated as "is" or "it is"

Korea is very modern, and you will often find digital tablets on the tables, allowing you to order directly without having to call the waiter. If there is no tablet, you can look for a button to call them, which is very practical as you don’t have to call out for service.

However, not all restaurants have those, so you may still need to get the waiter's attention by saying:
