[CULTURE] PC Bang: The Heart of Korea’s Gaming Culture

안녕하세요 여러분 👋

Let’s explore the exciting world of Korea's famous Internet cafes together!

The Korean term ‘PC bang’ (방) literally translates to ‘PC room’ in English. It is the modern word for 전자 카페, or ‘jeonja kape’, which directly translates to ‘electronic cafe’. The first electronic cafe was opened during the late 80’s in the Hongik University area! 🖥️

However, it wasn’t until the late 1990s that these places began to catch on, due to the economic crisis that left many Koreans jobless. Thanks to the affordable high-speed internet access and games like StarCraft, the popularity of these places skyrocketed.

Anyone can use a PC bang, but it is most popular among teenagers and college students. You will often find them playing co-op games like League of Legends, Valorant, and more. You will also find people use them for studying, work, or streaming their favorite K-dramas. 😊

🛜 PC Bang Guide 💻

While it may be daunting to go to a PC bang as a foreigner, by asking locals for help along with using translation apps like Papago and Google Translate, one can make the most of their time in a PC bang. It also helps that many gaming words are loan words from English!

At each PC bang, there will be a touch-screen ticket machine where you can pay for your time. You can order as a guest or as a member (you will need a Korean phone number to register) and choose how much time you’d like to play.  Remember to keep the receipt as it will have your login code to sign into the computer of your choice!
