I) From where was the original audio sourced?

MBN reporters came across a captivating sight at Ttukseom Hangang Park in Seoul in 2021: a spotted cat gracefully traversing the frozen Han River. Seizing the moment, they captured an image of it, which was then featured in news coverage of the cold wave.

The content offered a refreshing departure from the usual hard news, showcasing genuine moments, and, coupled with engaging narration that seemed to effortlessly flow, it quickly captivated online audiences, gaining unexpected popularity!

The reporter remarked, "A cat walks on the frozen Han River."

This became very popular and lots of parodies and challenges were made by Kpop idols such as Aespa’s Karina, IVE, Shinee’s Key, Super Junior, etc.

II) What do the lyrics mean?

As mentioned previously, 꽁꽁 얼어 붙은 한강 위로 고양이가 걸어 다닙니다 means A cat walks on the frozen Han River. 🐈🧊

Let’s check every word in detail!

👉 꽁꽁 (ggong-ggong): frozen solid. This expression describes something that is frozen solid or extremely solidified due to cold temperatures.

👉 얼어 (eo-reo): to freeze from the verb 얼다

👉 붙은 (bu-cheun): frozen. This is the past tense form of the verb 붙다 (to stick). Here, it describes something that has become frozen or stuck.

👉 한강 (Han-gang): Han River (a major river in South Korea)

👉 위로 (wi-ro): on. Indicating the location of the cat's movement.

👉 고양이가 (go-yang-i-ga): cat

👉 걸어 다닙니다 (geo-reo da-nim-ni-da): to walk. It's the polite form of the verb 다니다 (to walk).

III) How can you look for the challenge on social media?

You can use a short word created for this: #꽁냥이 which is a mix of 꽁꽁 (frozen) and 고양이 (cat).
You can also add the hashtag #챌린지 (challenge)!

These days, numerous parodies of the original trend abound, and here's a fresh addition where they added "갈까 말까 갈까 말까" to the end. This phrase combines the verb "가다" (to go) with the grammar pattern "을까 말까" (whether or not), resulting in the translation "should I go or not."
